Local Interest
The Glade lodge was originally build in 1936 to house
children refugees from the Spanish Civil War. In those days there were two
large dormitories to sleep in. Things have changed a bit since then, but the
building has lost none of its original character.
Walking
We are close (5 minutes walk up the lane) to the intersection of the Weald Way and Vanguard Way.
The Vanguard Way is a little-known long-distance walking trail starting in Croydon and winding through the countryside down to Newhaven. Travelling through the Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, it crosses the Weald Way near by.
The Weald Way is perhaps better known and is another long-distance route, from Gravesend to Eastbourne, through the magnificent High Weald.
The scenery on either route is breathtaking, and you can walk for miles without seeing another person.
Why not stop off at The Glade on your route, where a warm
bed, and warmer welcome awaits? We have maps galore and you'll get to meet
other walkers, chat about your favourites routes, and even amble up to the
local pub for a relaxing ale!
Steam Trains
The Bluebell Railway at Sheffield Park is a short car-drive
away. With working steam trains, and popular events such as visits from Thomas
the Tank Engine, and Big Engines Day, it's a delightful day out for enthusiasts
and interested amateurs alike. We welcome visitors to the railway who can stop
over and make a weekend of it!
Climbing
With Harrison's Rocks and Bowles less than 25 minutes away by car, The Glade is a great place to crash out at the end of a day's climbing.
Harrison's Rock is a beautiful stretch of sandstone hidden in the woods near Eridge. Sports climbers of all ages and abilities flock to the rocks, particularly in the summer, to try out classics such as Unclimbed Wall, Bow Window and Huggy bear. With this popular destination getting busy during the summer weekends, first thing, or late evening are the best times to get on the routes you really want to try.
Bowles is a smaller sandstone outcrop within the Bowles Outdoor Centre only 5 minutes from Harrison's. Very popular with climbers from London and beyond, it's a great place to spend the day, chilling-out on the grass and having a picnic. The best routes include the Pig's Nose and Serenade Arrete.
Why drive back to Brighton or London when you can stop over with us
for less than the petrol money, and get to the crags before the crowds?
Cyclists
There are plenty of cycle paths winding their way through the
Weald. For sedate journeys, follow the quiet winding country lanes, or for more
adrenaline, go off road. We have an ample bike shed to store your kit securely,
and welcome cyclists to come and clean-up and warm-up after a day on the pedals.
Stop over with us and be out on the road again feeling refreshed and relaxed.
